As you may know, Indiana will change to Daylight Savings Time on April 2nd. This email describes how to change the time zone on your Windows computer to the new time zone. If you do not change your time zone, your computer clock will not automatically change when it is supposed to.
There is an issue with the Microsoft Outlook calendar in regards to this time zone change. If you do not use Outlook as your calendar, or do not know what Outlook is, you may ignore the sections regarding Outlook.
Summary:
- All computers need to be changed from the 'Indiana' time zone to the 'Eastern Time' zone.
- Before this is done, please print your Outlook calendar from April to October 2006 if you have any items in the calendar during that time.
- Outlook calendar items scheduled between April 2nd and October 29th may incorrectly shift forward 1 hour after the time change on April 2nd.
Details:
If you do not use Microsoft Outlook for your calendar, you may skip to step 2.
1. --Outlook Calendar--
Please read the following warning regarding Outlook calendar issues:
- Before you implement any change to allow for daylight saving time, print your schedule or reference in case you must manually update appointments.
- If a meeting has multiple attendees, only the meeting organizer should update the time and send the update to the other attendees.
After April 2nd, please compare your schedule in Outlook to the printed one (as suggested above) to see which appointments have shifted. You will need to manually change each time if it has shifted. Most likely items will have shifted one hour forward.
2. --Change the time zone in Windows--
After you have printed your Outlook schedule (if needed), please change the Time Zone on your computer.
This web page has instructions on how to change your Time Zone in Windows: http://www.ehow.com/how_5544_set-time-zone.html
(Shortcut: in some versions of Windows you can double-click the clock in the lower right corner of the screen and choose the Time Zone tab)
Change the time zone from "(GMT -05:00) Indiana (East)" to "(GMT -05:00) Eastern Time(US & Canada)". After April 2, the Indiana time zone will be obsolete.
Here is what Microsoft has to say about the situation if you want to read a complicated article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914837
**You should also change all Palm or other handheld devices.
